“You’re not from around here, are you?”
Our September meeting will be an inspiring journey from 30,000 feet to the floor of the Central Valley, with hope and possibility at every turn. As horrifying as the current headlines are, we hope you’ll join us.
Nima Rahimi, regional vice president of the Iranian American Bar Association, brings us the view from the airport on the first chaotic day of the Muslim ban and other headlines from immigration law. Fran Schreiberg tells how Working America, a labor-affiliated canvassing organization, is working to flip House seats in the Central Valley and how we can help.
Please join us at the Chancellor Hotel on 9/28. You can RSVP on our Facebook event page. It’s free and open to the public.
Ground Zero: Nima Rahimi and the view from SFO
Trump has been projecting and protecting xenophobia from every podium he’s used – but not in our name.
When Trump took his dramatic step in January to roll up the carpet by Executive Order, protesters, immigration attorneys, and even Google’s Sergey Brin were among the thousand-strong SFO flash mob.
Nima Rahimi was there to assist and advise travelers. A recently appointed member to the City’s Immigrant Rights Commission, he can provide on-the-ground stories from the day of the Muslim decree as well as new developments from the Bay Area and beyond.
Flipping 99: Fran Schreiberg and the road less traveled
We city folk too readily file the Central Valley under “Trump people.” But Working America, through research and field work, knows that’s too simplistic and defeatist. The Valley isn’t solid red. Like all Americans, Valley residents are just trying to, pardon the pun, make their lives great again. We know who said it. We can show that we mean it.
Working America’s Fran Schreiberg can tell us some things Democrats got wrong, and how they’re working to get them right, in territory that ought to give us hope, not fear. They are working to flip Congressional Districts 10 (Jeff Denham, R-Turlock) and 21 (David Valadao, R-Hanford). And we in the Bay Area are by no means helpless.
